In Depth
El Nido is the reason Palawan is famous. The combination of 300-metre limestone karst formations, hidden lagoons accessible only through narrow cliff passages, and the UNESCO-protected marine environment of the Bacuit Archipelago creates a setting that genuinely defies description. Tour A covers the big and small lagoons (kayak-access only), secret beach (swim through a rock opening), and coral gardens. Tour B reaches Entalula Island, Pinagbuyutan, and Cudugnon Cave. Each tour covers a different archipelago cluster — doing two per day is realistic from a well-positioned villa.
The honest weakness of El Nido is its growing popularity. Peak season (December–March) brings a lot of boats to the lagoons, and Tour A's lagoons can feel busy between 10am and 2pm. Our concierge books private boats that depart at 7:30am — 90 minutes before the tour group rush — to access the lagoons in near-solitude. Villa selection matters enormously in El Nido: the best properties are clifftop or cove-access with boat arrival, positioned away from the town entirely.
El Nido Private Villa GuideCoron's reputation rests entirely on its diving — and that reputation is completely justified. The WWII Japanese fleet was sunk by the US Navy in September 1944 and now lies in 18–45 metres of water, fully encrusted with coral and teeming with marine life. The Irako, at 170 metres long, is one of the largest accessible wrecks in the world. Kayangan Lake — a freshwater volcanic lake inside limestone walls — offers a non-diving experience that is genuinely extraordinary, visible in the drone footage that appears on every Palawan travel video.
For guests who don't dive, Coron is harder to recommend than El Nido. The island-hopping circuit (Coron Islands, Bulog Dos, Siete Picados) is beautiful but not as dramatic as El Nido's lagoon system. Coron town is less developed for non-diving tourism. But for certified divers — especially those who have done reef diving and want something categorically different — the Coron wrecks are a bucket-list experience that justifies the entire trip.
Coron Luxury Villa GuideBy Traveler Type
First-time Palawan visitor
El Nido
The iconic Palawan experience — limestone lagoons, hidden beaches, and the scenery that makes this island world-famous.
Serious certified diver
Coron
WWII wrecks of the Irako and Akitsushima — world-class wreck diving not available anywhere else in the Philippines.
Photographer / videographer
El Nido
The lagoon and karst scenery is the most photographed landscape in the Philippines. Coron is beautiful but doesn't compete visually.
Couple / honeymoon
El Nido
Private cove villas, hidden beaches, and lagoon access make El Nido the more romantic destination for most couples.
Groups (8+ guests)
El Nido
More large villa options, better non-diving activities, and the tour circuit works well for mixed groups.
10+ night Palawan trip
Both
Take the helicopter. 45 minutes El Nido to Coron vs 8 hours by boat — our concierge arranges this regularly.
Bottom Line
El Nido wins for first-time Palawan visitors, non-divers, honeymooners, and anyone who wants the classic "most beautiful island" experience. Coron wins for certified divers, wreck enthusiasts, and those who want a rawer, less-toured Palawan. If you have 10 or more nights, do both — the helicopter transfer is 45 minutes and transforms the trip.
