Rare tarsier wildlife encounters
Exclusive beach resorts and villas
Bohol is the Philippines' most underrated luxury destination. While Boracay gets the crowds and Palawan gets the acclaim, Bohol quietly offers something equally extraordinary: pristine white beaches at Alona Beach and Anda, the otherworldly Chocolate Hills geological formation (over 1,200 conical hills turning chocolate brown in dry season), the rare Philippine tarsier (world's smallest primate), and the Loboc River's floating restaurant cruise through canyon jungle. The island is calm, uncrowded, and genuinely off the beaten path for luxury travelers. Panglao Island, connected to Bohol by bridge, hosts the finest villa rentals with direct Bohol Sea access. Best season: November through May.

Bohol Travel Info
Everything you need to know before planning your luxury villa escape to Bohol.
The Chocolate Hills are Bohol's most iconic natural landmark — a geological formation of 1,268 (some estimates cite over 1,700) uniformly conical hills rising from flat plains in the interior of Bohol, each covered in grass that turns brown ("chocolate") during the dry season, creating a landscape unlike anything else in the world. Their precise geological origin remains partially mysterious — theories include ancient coral limestone formations raised by tectonic activity. The main viewpoint is at the Chocolate Hills Adventure Park in Carmen, where a staircase ascent to an observation deck reveals the full panorama of the hills stretching to the horizon. The experience is best at sunrise or early morning when mist fills the valleys between hills and crowds have not yet arrived.
The Philippine tarsier (Tarsius syrichta) is one of the world's smallest primates — a palm-sized primate with enormous eyes (the largest relative to body size of any mammal), gripping fingers and toes, and the ability to rotate their heads nearly 180 degrees. They are nocturnal, carnivorous, and uniquely sensitive creatures that can die from stress. The Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary in Corella, Bohol, is operated by the Philippine Tarsier Foundation and uses a semi-wild sanctuary approach — tarsiers are observed in their natural forest habitat with a silent, no-flash-photography policy. This is more ethical and more rewarding than the older captive display approach. The sanctuary is approximately 12km from Tagbilaran City.
Absolutely — the Loboc River Cruise is one of Bohol's most celebrated experiences and should not be skipped on a first visit. The cruise runs along one of the Philippines' most beautiful rivers — extraordinarily green, calm, and surrounded by ancient-looking tropical vegetation. The combination of Filipino buffet lunch, live folk music and cultural performances, and the serene river scenery creates a genuinely memorable experience. The cruise ends at a small cultural village where traditional dances are performed. The total experience lasts about 1.5 hours. Cost is approximately PHP 500 to PHP 700 per person including buffet. It is one of the most enjoyable tourist activities in the Visayas for visitors of all ages.
Direct flights from Manila (NAIA) to Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Tagbilaran (TAG) are operated by Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines — flight duration is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. Multiple daily flights run during peak season. Alternatively, fly Manila to Cebu (1 hour 10 minutes, multiple daily flights with several airlines) then take the fast craft ferry from Cebu Pier 1 to Tagbilaran (2 hours, multiple daily sailings) — slightly longer in total but often significantly cheaper in combined fare. Overnight ferries from Manila to Tagbilaran are also available (approximately 20–22 hours) for budget travelers. For most leisure visitors, the most practical routing depends on flight fare comparisons between direct Tagbilaran flights and the Manila–Cebu–Bohol combination.
The most popular and convenient route is the fast craft ferry from Cebu Pier 1 (near SM City Cebu) to Tagbilaran City, Bohol — operated by Ocean Jet, SuperCat, and other fast ferry operators. Journey time is approximately 2 hours, and multiple sailings operate throughout the day, roughly from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Advance ticket purchase is recommended on long weekends and during peak season. Tickets cost approximately PHP 500 to PHP 700 for economy class. From Tagbilaran pier, tricycles and taxis connect to Panglao Island's Alona Beach in approximately 30 to 45 minutes (PHP 200 to PHP 400 by tricycle, PHP 300 to PHP 500 by taxi). Cebu to Bohol is one of the Philippines' most well-traveled inter-island routes.
Panglao Island is connected to the Bohol mainland by two bridges and is approximately 20 to 30 minutes from Tagbilaran City's pier. Options from Tagbilaran pier: multicabs (shared mini-jeepneys) run the Tagbilaran-Panglao route for PHP 15 to PHP 30 per person; tricycles to Alona Beach cost PHP 150 to PHP 300; UV express vans are available for PHP 50 to PHP 80; and taxis or Grab can be arranged for PHP 200 to PHP 350. Most resorts on Panglao offer airport and pier transfer services upon request — often included in higher-tier accommodation packages. For travelers arriving with heavy luggage from the ferry, a pre-arranged resort transfer is the most comfortable option.
Bohol's finest luxury accommodation is concentrated on Panglao Island — a small island connected to Bohol's main island by a bridge and home to the province's best beaches. Amorita Resort, perched on a clifftop above Alona Beach with stunning sea views and beautifully designed native-material villas, is considered the finest resort on Panglao. Bohol Beach Club is the island's most established beachfront resort, offering a well-developed pool and beach facility on a wide stretch of Panglao sand. South Palms Resort Panglao delivers a long stretch of beach, an impressive pool, and spacious rooms at the higher end of mid-range. For boutique charm away from Alona's crowds, Eskaya Beach Resort and Spa on the quieter east coast of Panglao is architecturally distinctive and highly regarded. In the Bohol mainland's interior, several heritage-style guesthouses near Loboc River offer atmospheric alternative accommodation.
The majority of tourists stay on Panglao Island, where the best beaches and the diving scene are concentrated. Within Panglao: Alona Beach (Barangay Tawala) is the most famous and most visited — a compact, 1-km white sand beach lined with guesthouses, restaurants, and dive shops, with a lively social atmosphere and easy access to dive boats. Doljo Beach and Danao Beach on Panglao's other sides offer quieter, less developed beach settings with fewer facilities. Tagbilaran City (the provincial capital) on the main Bohol island is practical for transit and city amenities but has no beach access. For visitors prioritizing the Chocolate Hills and tarsier sanctuary, staying in Carmen or along the Loboc River reduces daily travel time significantly.
