Bohol · Panglao Island
Bohol's finest beach strip — Alona's reef, Balicasag diving, and the island's most exclusive villa positions
About Panglao Island
Panglao Island connects to the Bohol mainland by two short bridges and contains, within its compact geography, the best of what draws travelers to Bohol: the famous Alona Beach with its white sand strip and immediate reef access, the world-class diving sites of Balicasag Island (a 20-minute boat ride offshore), pristine reefs at Doljo and Danao beaches that see almost no visitors, and a small cluster of genuinely excellent private villas whose prices remain well below equivalent properties in Boracay or Palawan. For couples, honeymooners, and small groups who want world-class diving, a beautiful beach, and a quiet, un-touristy atmosphere at a significant value advantage, Panglao is the answer.
What Awaits
Alona Beach's reputation for crowding is outdated — post-2020 visitor levels are significantly lower and the beach feels genuinely quiet outside of Holy Week. The reef begins at the waterline, making shore snorkelling immediately rewarding. Private villas near Alona have direct beach access without the backpacker-strip atmosphere.
Balicasag Marine Sanctuary, 20 minutes offshore by private boat, contains some of the Philippines' best wall diving — steep drop-offs with black-tip sharks, hawksbill turtles, and large pelagic fish. The turtle colony at the cleaning station is accessible without diving — snorkellers can observe from the surface.
Panglao's north and west coasts — Doljo Beach and Danao Beach — are where the island's most private villa positions are found. Almost no day visitors, calmer and more protected water than Alona, and beach walks that feel genuinely deserted. The contrast with peak-season Alona is dramatic.
The Chocolate Hills — Bohol's most iconic natural wonder and one of the Philippines' nine UNESCO candidates — are 30 minutes from Panglao by private van. The dawn visit, when mist fills the valleys between 1,268 conical hills, is one of the most extraordinary natural experiences in Southeast Asia.
Panglao villa prices run 30–50% below equivalent Boracay properties, and 40–60% below El Nido. The quality differential does not match the price differential — Panglao's best villas are genuinely excellent. For value-conscious luxury travelers, Panglao is the Philippines' best-kept secret.
The Philippine tarsier — one of the world's smallest primates, with eyes larger than its brain — lives in a protected sanctuary 15 minutes from Panglao by van. These nocturnal animals are best seen in the early morning before tours arrive. The Bohol Tarsier Sanctuary operates ethically and is consistently rated as one of the Philippines' best wildlife experiences.
