Dramatic limestone karst formations

Hidden emerald lagoons and secret beaches

UNESCO World Heritage protected areas

Exclusive private island resorts

World-class diving and snorkeling sites

Palawan has been voted the world's most beautiful island multiple times — and the title is earned. The province stretches 650 kilometres and splits into two distinct luxury destinations: El Nido in the north, famous for dramatic 300-metre limestone karst towers, secret lagoons only accessible by boat, and some of the Philippines' most exclusive private island resorts; and Coron in the northeast, known for its pristine dive sites, Japanese wreck diving, and volcanic lakes surrounded by cliffs. El Nido is ideal for first-time visitors and those seeking dramatic scenery and private lagoon access. Coron is for divers, nature explorers, and those wanting total seclusion. The entire Palawan archipelago is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve — strict development controls keep the environment pristine and guarantee long-term exclusivity for guests. Best season: November through April.

Shoulder Season

October, May

Transitional months — good weather with occasional showers

Palawan Travel Info

Palawan FAQs

Everything you need to know before planning your luxury villa escape to Palawan.

El Nido is world-famous for its dramatic limestone karst landscape — vertical limestone cliffs rising from turquoise water surrounding the Bacuit Archipelago — and its extraordinary island hopping experience, which takes visitors through hidden lagoons, secret beaches, cathedral-like cave entrances, and vibrant coral reefs. The Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon of Miniloc Island are globally iconic. El Nido consistently appears on lists of the world's most beautiful island destinations. Beyond island hopping, El Nido also offers excellent diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and community-based cultural tourism with local Tagbanua communities.

El Nido's Department of Tourism organizes island hopping into four standard itineraries: Tour A (Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Shimizu Island) — the most popular and iconic, featuring the famous lagoons; Tour B (Pangalusian Island, Entalula Island, Cathedral Cave, Cudugnon Cave, Snake Island) — excellent for caves and beaches; Tour C (Helicopter Island, Secret Beach, Star Beach, Matinloc Shrine, Tapiutan Strait) — stunning beaches and unique natural formations; and Tour D (Cadlao Island, Bukal Island, Paradise Beach, Nagkalit-kalit Falls) — less crowded with a waterfall highlight. Tour A is most visited but requires early departure to beat the crowds to the lagoons. Private tour boats allow greater timing flexibility and more personalized service.

The Big Lagoon is accessed by bangka boat (outrigger boat) from El Nido town as part of Tour A island hopping. The journey takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes from El Nido pier. At the entrance to the Big Lagoon, visitors transfer to kayaks (rented on-site) or join the kayak pool included in most tour packages, as the lagoon entrance is too shallow and narrow for bangka boats. The lagoon is then explored by paddle — roughly 30 to 60 minutes of kayaking through an enclosed lime-green water body surrounded by towering vertical limestone walls. Environmental regulations limit the number of boats and visitors per day — early departure (before 8:00 AM) avoids the peak crowding period.

The most convenient option is a direct flight from Manila to El Nido Airport (ENI) — served by Air Swift (the primary carrier) and occasionally other small regional operators. The flight takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Air Swift offers multiple daily flights in peak season and fewer in off-peak months. Seats fill quickly — book well in advance, particularly from November to May. The alternative is to fly Manila to Puerto Princesa (PPS) — a larger airport served by multiple airlines (Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, AirAsia) with more frequent and cheaper flights — then travel overland by shared van or private vehicle to El Nido (5 to 6 hours). Both routes have their advantages depending on budget and scheduling flexibility.

Direct flights from Manila to Busuanga Airport (USU) — the gateway to Coron — are operated by Cebu Pacific, Air Swift, and PAL Express. Flight duration is approximately 1 hour. From Busuanga Airport, vans and tricycles connect to Coron town (approximately 30 to 45 minutes). Flights are less frequent to Busuanga than to Puerto Princesa, and peak season capacity is limited. The alternative is the fast ferry from Manila Pier (approximately 8 to 12 hours by 2GO or fast craft services), suitable for travelers without severe time constraints who want a slower, more scenic journey. Flight booking three to four months ahead is recommended for peak season travel to Coron.

Yes. A direct fast boat service (El Nido to Coron Transfer) operates between the two destinations — a scenic journey of approximately 4 to 8 hours depending on the operator and sea conditions, passing through the extraordinary limestone island landscape of the Linapacan Strait. Several operators (2GO, Montenegro Lines, and specialized island transfer services) offer this route, which is one of the most spectacular boat journeys in the Philippines. It is recommended for the "Palawan circuit" — flying into El Nido, exploring the lagoons, taking the boat transfer to Coron for diving, then flying home from Busuanga. Book boat transfers well in advance during peak season.

Palawan hosts some of the finest resort experiences in all of Southeast Asia. In El Nido: El Nido Resorts operates four island resorts (Miniloc Island, Pangulasian Island, Lagen Island, and Apulit Island), with Pangulasian earning particular recognition as one of Asia's finest eco-luxury resorts, featuring treehouse-style villas and extraordinary access to the Bacuit Archipelago. Lio Tourism Estate (developed by Ayala Land) brings boutique hotel options to the mainland near El Nido town. In Coron: Two Seasons Coron Island Resort and Club Paradise Palawan on Dimakya Island are the benchmark luxury properties. In Puerto Princesa: Sheraton Puerto Princesa opened as the city's first international luxury hotel. For raw exclusivity, Amanpulo on Pamalican Island (accessible only by charter flight) is one of the Philippines' most revered ultra-luxury resorts.

Staying in El Nido town (on the Palawan mainland) gives access to a wide range of restaurants, tour operators, shops, and social atmosphere at mid-range to budget price points. Town-based accommodation is a short boat ride from the lagoons and beaches, which are accessed on day tours. Staying on one of the offshore island resorts (El Nido Resorts' Miniloc or Pangulasian) provides an immersive, all-inclusive experience surrounded by the Bacuit Archipelago — waking up to the limestone karsts from your villa deck, with private beach access and curated tours from the resort. Island resorts are significantly more expensive but eliminate the need to arrange tours independently and offer unparalleled access to the natural environment.
