El Nido vs Coron: Which Part of Palawan for a Luxury Villa?

Palawan has two world-class destinations — El Nido and Coron. Both are extraordinary. Both are in the same province. They have almost nothing in common. Here is the most honest guide we can write.

Palawan is the Philippines at its most extraordinary — and within Palawan, two destinations stand apart: El Nido in the north and Coron in the northeast. Both are world-class. Both are in the same province. They have almost nothing in common beyond sharing a coastline.

If you are planning a luxury villa stay in Palawan and trying to choose between them — or wondering whether you can experience both on the same trip — this is the most honest guide we can write, based on years of sending guests to both destinations and listening carefully to what they said when they returned.

El Nido: The Scenery Capital of the Philippines

El Nido earns its global reputation honestly. The Bacuit Archipelago — 45 islands and islets ringed by 200–300-metre limestone karst formations — creates a visual environment that guests consistently describe with words like "unreal" and "nothing like I expected." The famous island-hopping routes (Tour A, B, C, and D) cover different island clusters within the bay, each with its own secret lagoon, hidden beach, or coral garden accessible only by narrow kayak passage through cliff walls.

The Big Lagoon is the most photographed, and rightly so: a calm turquoise lake enclosed by sheer limestone, silent except for the sound of your kayak paddle. The Secret Beach requires swimming through a small gap in the rock face — and what you find on the other side is a private white sand cove. Our concierge arranges private boat departures at 7:30am — you have the lagoons to yourselves for the first 90 minutes of the day, before the tour group rush begins.

El Nido villa positions are extraordinary. The most exclusive properties are clifftop estates overlooking the entire bay — infinity pools appearing to float above the karsts — or private cove villas accessible only by boat, with no road connection at all. For guests who want the feeling of genuine discovery, El Nido delivers better than anywhere else we work with in the Philippines.

Coron: The Diver's Palawan

Coron is what happens when extraordinary natural geography meets extraordinary history. In September 1944, the United States Navy sank 24 Japanese supply ships in a single air raid on Coron Bay. Those ships now rest at between 15 and 45 metres depth, fully encrusted with coral, home to enormous grouper, sea turtles, and lionfish. The Irako — a refrigeration ship at 170 metres long — is one of the largest accessible wrecks in the world. These are not just wreck dives; they are encounters with preserved history in an underwater museum of extraordinary scale.

Above water, Coron has Kayangan Lake — a volcanic, freshwater lake enclosed by sheer limestone walls, hyper-clear to 15-metre visibility. The short hike from the jetty to the lake viewpoint is one of the most photographed single experiences in the Philippines. Twin Lagoon, where saltwater and freshwater layers meet in a temperature gradient you can feel while swimming, is another experience that defies easy description.

Coron is less developed than El Nido — fewer restaurants, less nightlife, a smaller range of villa properties. For guests who prioritize diving above everything else, and who want a rawer, more adventurous atmosphere, this is not a weakness. It is precisely the point.

The Honest Comparison

  • Choose El Nido if: this is your first time in Palawan, you are not a certified diver, you want the Philippines' most visually spectacular landscape, you are on a honeymoon or romantic trip, or you want the best island-hopping in the country.
  • Choose Coron if: you are a certified diver and wreck diving is a priority, you want a destination that feels less discovered, Kayangan Lake is on your bucket list, or you want a 15–30% lower price point for an equivalent quality villa experience.

Can You Do Both?

Yes — and this is our most common recommendation for guests with 9 or more nights in Palawan. El Nido and Coron are 250km apart by sea (a 4–5 hour fast ferry) or 45 minutes by light aircraft or helicopter. The combination works particularly well in one direction: start in El Nido for the lagoon scenery and island hopping (3–4 nights), then move to Coron for the diving and volcanic lakes (3–4 nights).

For guests who want to do both in comfort without the ferry, we arrange private light aircraft or helicopter transfers. The helicopter version — 45 minutes, low altitude over the Calamian archipelago — is itself one of the most spectacular aerial experiences in Southeast Asia.

Getting There: Practical Notes

El Nido is reached via Lio Airport (direct flights from Manila on AirSWIFT, approximately 1 hour 20 minutes). Coron is served by Busuanga Airport, 1 hour direct from Manila, operated by multiple carriers. Busuanga is actually the easier airport — less weather-dependent and with more flight frequency during peak season.

Verdict from Our Concierge Team

If you can only do one: El Nido, for a first Palawan trip. The visual impact of Bacuit Bay and the lagoon experience is singular. Return to Coron for your second trip, when you are certified to dive and want to go deeper into what the island has to offer.

If you have the time and budget: do both, in that order. Two very different Palawans, two sets of memories that do not overlap at all. Our Palawan concierge team can advise on villa selection for both destinations, arrange the inter-island transfer, and coordinate all activities end-to-end.
